Deep-dive projects Georgetown-Julia Creek
Page last updated:26 August 2025
The Georgetown-Julia Creek region is an emerging minerals province with untapped potential for critical minerals and groundwater systems needed to support industry and communities.
Under the Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity initiative, the Georgetown-Julia Creek Deep Dive project will deliver an improved geological framework (surface to lithosphere) for the region which, when combined with resource potential assessments, will provide a holistic view of the region’s multi-commodity resource potential and opportunities for development.
This work will also characterise and map the hydrostratigraphy of the region's groundwater systems to inform natural resource management decisions and better understand interactions between groundwater and surface water.
A regional Deep Dive Reference Group will be established to inform and advise the initiative's activities. The Reference Group will be open to all stakeholders in the region, including landowners/holders, First Nations peoples, governments, regulators, industry as well as other communities. Members will have an opportunity to inform the initiative of those information and/or data gaps that are considered critical to, and for, decision-making in the region.

This project is due to commence in 2027, following the completion of the Delamerian Deep Dive. Foundations for work in the region are already underway through new data collection with the Boodjamulla-Croydon Reflection Seismic Survey, a collaboration with the Geological Survey of Queensland. Scheduled to be completed in September 2025, the survey will deliver over 800 km of deep crustal seismic reflection data that will yield new insights into the geological evolution and resource potential of the region.
