Melbourne residents woken by 3.8 magnitude earthquake

More than 20,000 people in Sunbury, Victoria have reported feeling a magnitude 3.8 earthquake late last night.

Geoscience Australia’s National Earthquake Alerts Centre recorded the earthquake at 11.41pm local time. As at 1.30am, 20,732 felt reports have been made by the community via the website.

Most of the reports are centred around Melbourne, but there are some as far north as Bendigo and as far south as Hobart.

In the last five years, four other earthquakes of magnitude three or greater have been recorded in Victoria, including a 5.9 magnitude north of Rawson in 2021 which caused some localised damage.
